Summary of our Oxford Rugby Club Networking Event

Oxford Rugby Club Networking event at Urban ElementThe Oxford Rugby Club Networking event was held at our offices in Witney on November 15th.

This networking seminar focused on online marketing, with a presentation from Jon Ellard entitled “A Strategic Approach to Web Design & Online Marketing”.  This highlighted the importance of getting all aspects of your online presence right and having a consistent message across all of your online platforms.

While Jon was presenting this, our Creative Director Malcolm and our Online Marketing Specialist Nikki were busy preparing website reviews for two willing volunteers, Holt Hotel and Bertram Rota. These website reviews analysed the design of the websites, their social media presence and the technical setup on the site. All of these factors are likely to be affecting their positions in the search results, as well as the conversion rates of customers once they are on their websites. These reviews are available from Urban Element for £149+VAT. If you are interested in one of these or would like more information, please contact us.

We have had some really great feedback from delegates at the event via Twitter, as well as some really positive email comments. One such example of this is the feedback that we received from Carl Evans at St James’s Place Wealth Management who commented:

Thanks for the seminar yesterday, I got some clear messages, notably Social Media is here to stay!  Interesting how you talk about the website and social media being integral to marketing strategies.

Carl enjoyed the event so much that he will also be attending our WitneyTV launch on November 25th.

The presentation was followed by a networking lunch where all delegates got the chance to ask questions to our online marketing and web design specialists. In particular, they all seemed to be really fired up about the use of social media following the presentation by Jon and the inclusion of this in the website reviews.

You can also see a video testimonial from one of the attendees here.

WitneyTV Launch Event

A while back, we told you about the redesign we had done for the local community website, WitneyTV and we promised you that the second phase of this would be really exciting.

Well the wait is finally over as we can officially reveal that next Friday 25th November, there will be a star studded event to mark the launch of the full site.

The event is to be held at our offices in Witney and will begin at 11am. This will be an open session where local businesses can turn up to register their company for FREE with the WitneyTV business directory (if they haven’t done so already) as well as put any of their burning questions to our web design, online marketing and development experts.

From 1pm, canapés will be provided with a chance to meet a number of local businesses, before the big switch on of the new website by a very special guest.

Refreshments on the day will be provided by local drinks companies Samuelsons and Wychwood Brewery who will be supplying old fashioned lemonade and Hobgoblin beer.

The day will also feature appearances from a few other familiar faces so it really is an event not to be missed!

If you are interested in attending, please contact Urban Element on 01993 776 999 as only registered guests will be able to attend the event.

Seminar: A Strategic Approach to Web Design and Online Marketing

9 years on from signing my first website deal for Urban Element, I have been asked by Oxford Rugby Football club to speak at one of their monthly networking events run by Abbotts Advertising. Having previously spoken at their event at The Bicester Hotel Golf & Spa last year and wanting to support Oxford RFC, I immediately agreed.

However, then the panic crept in about what to talk about and how to make the session not only entertaining, but also of real value. I spend at least 10% of my working life at networking meetings or seminars, and 90% of what I hear is either uninteresting or the same old rhetoric.

As a starting point, I looked back over my notes from last year’s session grandly titled “‘How to get a great return on web design and online marketing” and wondered if I could just revamp that one. It made me laugh to think that my ego had allowed me not to use the word average, good or even strong, but GREAT.  I wonder what my SEO team would say about measuring a “great return”….

From our own return on investment point of view, we did sign two new clients from this event, one of which hadn’t attended but had heard how “great” it was (people who know me will know to take this all with a pinch of salt).

But back to the problem of what to talk about at the seminar.  Being in a competitive industry where pretty much anyone who has a laptop claims to be able to design a website, it is rare for me to get frustrated by cheap nasty alternatives. Everyday someone is shouting about a £500 website package or being a Social Media expert and this I can rise above. However, in the last few months we have seen the growth in website packages from companies such as BT, Yell, 1 and 1 etc., all promising to provide a professional online presence in a matter of minutes/hours. These claims coupled with the fact that I have recently listened to several well respected business speakers recommending that businesses should start using social media without a care in the world have raised alarm bells. It is scary that these professional speakers have spent years telling us that we need a sound, well thought out business plan, but when it comes to tweets, blogs and the all the rest, we should just go out and go hell for leather.

It is these two factors that have started shaping the seminar that I want to present. Before joining Urban Element in 2003, I ran a traditional marketing company and from day one I have believed that any marketing should be strategic. For your website or online marketing campaign to succeed, it has to be carefully thought out and well planned. Business people spend decades developing their customer relationship skills and service but rarely ever think about what customer experience their customers (or potential customers) are having on their website. Business owners will take the time to speak with their top clients on the phone, but then pay someone to tweet or blog on their behalf without a well thought out and agreed online communications strategy. Companies with excellent internal operational processes that have been honed over many years fail to see this through their website offering time and time again. How many times have we tried to buy online from a trusted high street retailer only to leave many clicks later, angry and frustrated that we couldn’t find what we wanted as there was no online help?

I am, of course, generalising in many ways but the point that I am trying to make, and what will become the substance of my seminar, is that for a website or online marketing campaign to succeed, it needs to be strategically thought about and have the right investment, resource and commitment behind it.

As part of this ongoing strategy, we have noticed a number of issues in our own existing website that needed updating, and so we have spent the past few months working on a new site for ourselves, a sneak preview of which can be seen in the screenshot below:

Urban Element website

My advice to other business owners and managers is to live and breathe your website. Be involved in every step and make sure that your purpose and USPs comes across and are evident in your web and online marketing activities.

If you have found my musings of interest, please let me know and I will expand upon them and also update you on the structure of my seminar. Alternatively, if you want to attend the event which is being held at our office on November 15th 2011 between 12 and 2pm, please contact Lisa at Abbotts Advertising.

UE Launches New Networking Group in Witney

Here at UE we really believe in making the most of and learning from the people around you and that’s why MD, Jon Ellard has decided to launch Witney Juice, a new business networking and development group for West Oxfordshire.

Having attended several networking groups and events Jon felt that there was more that could be made of the time and skills of the people that were attending.

I have been to many networking groups but Juice is the only local one that mixes business support, information sharing and referrals. Referrals will only increase from fellow businesses you trust and understand

Web Design Oxford

To help launch this new group, Jon decided to use the skills of the UE Design team and set Mark, Sasha and Niki Forecast to work on the visual identity, print work and website design. For Niki, our part-time intern, this was an opportunity to design and build an entire website from scratch, something she had never done before.

“ I really enjoyed working on the Juice site as it gave me the change to work on a project from beginning to end. I particularly enjoyed the design aspect, as it is not something, which I get to do much of in my degree. I had regular crits with the senior designers at UE and the whole project has been a fantastic learning curve.”

Since it’s launch a few weeks ago, Witney juice has already gained several members from a variety of business sectors, all operating in and around the Witney area.  Despite this they are always on the lookout for more members and are making use of social media and QR codes to do this.

Online MarketingWe have made the group an independent group so there us no joining fee. Promotional activity will be conducted through the power of social media which will keep the costs of the group minimal. Keep an eye out for our brand and QR Codes
