Project Management – what does that really mean?

As project manager here at Urban Element, I find that it is far more than managing the mechanics of a project – it’s managing client expectations, the team, the highs, the lows and your boss’ expectations! It is also managing budgets, time lines, quality – it is so much more than simply kicking a project off, telling people what to do and expecting it to finish on time. There’s monitoring, mentoring, juggling and INVOLVING!

I have this quote on my desk as a daily reminder to involve people within the project:

Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand

Chinese Proverb

It really can be a challenging role but I find these top ten tips from Pete from Gibe Talking really useful in helping me manage the many projects that we undertake each month.

New Updates to Facebook

In what is being seen as a bid to take on Twitter more fiercely, Facebook has now added the ability to ‘subscribe’ to individual users and pages. As with Twitter, you do not need to know someone to subscribe to them and they do not have to approve you to allow you to see their updates.

When subscribing to a profile, you can select what kind of updates you want to subscribe to, however, the profile has to mark their update as public in order for you to be able to see it. This is in line with the recent updates to the privacy settings that Facebook recently added whereby you can select whether to share your updates and photos with friends or make them public, and also whether to add a location as shown below:

You can also subsribe to the updates of people that you are already friends with, meaning that you can limit the updates that you receive from them (for example, you can stop viewing someone’s Farmville update).

To allow people to subscribe to your profile, you will need to turn this option on as it is not currently a default for all users. You can read more about the update or find out how to add the subscribe button to your own profile here.

Is Your Site Mobile Friendly?

mobile websiteThe Internet is increasingly being accessed by mobile devices. Earlier this year, it was estimated that there were 1.08billion smartphones around the world, accounting for over 23% of online traffic and earlier this week, it was predicted that more people in the US will access the Internet via a mobile device than a laptop or desktop computer by the year 2015.

In 2010, 8% of online purchases were made on a mobile. It has been estimated that 44% of last minute shopping will be done via a mobile device this Christmas (only 14 weeks to go!). It is therefore more important than ever that your site is optimised for use on a mobile device., and as such, a number of considerations need to be made when designing a site that is to be viewed on a mobile.

The design should be as simple as possible, allowing users to easily find and purchase items, and of course, not use flash which can not be viewed on iPhones or iPads. ASOS and Marks & Spencer are widely regarded as having well designed, easy to use mobile sites

Those looking for products on a mobile may not necessarily be looking to buy, but may be looking for product reviews or nearby stockists. For this reason, it is also important to be able to easily find contact information and ensure that your site is set up for local search.

Try navigating your own site on your mobile and see how easy it is to use – if you are struggling, think how difficult your customers must be finding it!
